How to Make Sure Your Teeth Stay Tough and Strong and Don’t Wear Down

Posted in

Our teeth are naturally tough. After all, they are made to bite through meat and grind plant and vegetable material.   But years of wear and tear would one day break them down. As a consequence, when we get older, we may have teeth that are broken, chipped, or fractured.

Why our teeth get chipped, broken, or fractured

There are a variety of reasons why our teeth get damaged. We can fracture our teeth, for example, when we bite onto something hard, such as a boiled sweet or a kernel of corn. However, this occurrence is not that common. There are various other reasons for damaging our teeth.

Sports

Some sports cause more tooth breakdowns and fractures than others. If you are heavily involved in sports such as boxing, wrestling, karate, or basketball, you are more likely to suffer from a broken or fractured tooth. But, in essence, all kinds of sports activities can result in fractured teeth. What you can do if you do not want to quit sports altogether is to wear a mouth guard. You can buy mouth guards at various sporting goods shops, but you can also request for a custom-made mouth guard from your dentist, or ask them to recommend a place where you can get a custom one.

Root canals or fillings

Another reason why our teeth get fractured or broken is when we have root canals or fillings. When teeth have fillings or root canals, they are less strong than teeth that are intact. One way to avoid breaking your teeth is not to bite down on hard food such as boiled sweets, seedy bread, or ice.

Bruxism

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a condition which affects many individuals today. This is when someone unconsciously grinds or clenches their teeth, most often whilst they are sleeping. Over time, constant teeth grinding can cause cracks in your teeths enamel, and may even contribute to the occurrence of headaches, jaw injury, or muscle pain. Bruxism is linked to stress and anger issues, and most individuals have benefited from stress management therapy and techniques. For more drastic measures, bruxism sufferers can be prescribed with a splint or mouth guard which protects their lower or upper teeth.

Acid

Another cause of tooth breakdown is too much acid in the mouth. And this is something that most of us are guilty of. There are plenty of food and drinks which are quite acidic, and we should avoid these or at least restrict our consumption of them. Acidic drinks include soda, coffee, wine, and other alcoholic beverages.   If you have too much acid in your mouth, it can contribute to enamel erosion.

Of course, we should not forget to do the usual activities for promoting oral health. Brushing our teeth at least twice a day is a must, and daily flossing is essential as well. Aside from this, we should make it a point to visit our dentist twice a year, and not to delay a visit when we notice or feel something different, even if it is the smallest cavity or a slight toothache.

As we all know, having good teeth is crucial to having a nice smile. Take it from the experts at thesmileexperts ““ an ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure.
