Weekender L.A. || Outfest + Pinoy Classic Rock Forum + Lea Salonga + Sissy (extended!)

Everybody's workin' for the weekend--even in the sum-sum-summatime. To help you maximize your dose of culture and anarchy, here are O!I's quickpix for So. Cal for July 11-13...

For all you queer bunnies, and hot tranny messes out there is this weekend's full slate of Outfest opening activities, not the least of which is Jose Munoz and Nao Bustamante's program at Redcat this Friday night at 7pm, The Monsters in Our Closets: Secrets of the Gay Archive Exposed. Peruse the schedule and get your tix at http://www.outfest.org.

The venerable Pinoy Classic Rock website hosts a frisky, rockin' get together for our titos and titas, moms and dads, and in some cases even our lolos and lolas. They'll be taking over the dance floor at The Knott's Berry Farm resort this July 12-13. Tickets are $60 presale and $65 at the door for dancing, dining and other special surprises. FYI: PCR is a great archive of info for folks working on Pinoy rock, pop and fusion from the 70s onward. KT's mom, uncle, godfather and bio-dad's The Circus Band is even commemorated on the site. Click on the poster for more details about how to hook up wid da oldies but goodies sa Knott's.

From PCR, to the Philippines' first lady of global pop and schmaltz, Lea Salonga. Lea won both the Tony and an Olivier awards for originating the roll of Kim in Miss Saigon. She's since taken her turn as both Eponine and Fantine (a decade apart) in Les Miserables. And of course, hers is the singing voice that makes Mulan magical. This Friday night, July 11 at 8:30pm, Lea makes her debut in the Global Pop series as "the first Filipina vocal soloist to headline Disney Concert Hall" (according to TFC, the Filipino Channel on cable TV). Get tickets here, and double down if you can with Outfest's "Monsters" at Redcat, and Lea at DCH!

And last, but certainly not least, get your downtown funk and revolutionary flair on during the extended run of ALOTR fave, Ricardo Bracho's hot and heartwarming play, SISSY. Staged at the Company of Angels theater in the historic Alexandria hotel downtown, Sissy is set in 1979 to the refrains of disco, funk, pop and punk as the title character comes of age as a queer of color boy in the sub-urban environs of Culver City, CA, who has to grapple with both Sandanistas and sibling drama . The run has been extended to July 20, but get your tickets now as several dates have already SOLD OUT. Click on the Sissy marquee to the right for more info, and to reserve tickets. - (ALOTR)
